Modern Amazons is going on sabbatical for a year, whilst the work we do has our absolute commitment, personal life has had to take a priority for 2007. Thank you for your continued support and patience which, as always means so much to us.
All the best
Annie Middleton (Founder)
Modern Amazons is a stunning exhibition of photographs
of young women whom have been affected by breast cancer; they
have been taken by high profile photographers such as Bryan
Adams, Nadav Kander, Steve Pyke, Eammon McCabe and Jake Walters.
Everyone involved in this project has very generously donated
their time and services. Professor Ian Smith, Head of the
Breast Unit at The Royal Marsden Hospital, said of the project:
"I am delighted to support the Modern Amazons project
which will hopefully be of great support and inspiration to
other patients successfully treated for breast cancer. Annie
Middleton is a great example of what can be done with her
incredibly hard work and determination."
Modern Amazons' founder is Annie Middleton, who was diagnosed
with breast cancer in 2000 at just 30 years old, and a single
mother to two children. Determined to gain something positive
she created Modern Amazons to raise breast awareness in younger
women, and ultimately to change the public's perception of
younger women with breast cancer from 'victim', to 'Victor'
To date Modern Amazons has had a hugely successful
tour of the exhibition, starting at the Hempel Hotel in London
and on the 52 Plasma screens in-store at Selfridges during
March 2004, at Glastonbury Festival 2004, at the Royal Society
of Medicine in August 2004 and at the Battersea Arts Centre
in November 2004-January 2005. Another successful Glastonbury
for us, June 2005
Modern Amazons has enjoyed great exposure with
major articles in locals and nationals, such as the Daily
Mail, the Guardian, You Magazine and other Sunday supplements.
Local and National TV and Radio have also covered events.
There are many exciting projects in the pipeline
for Modern Amazons which will be unveiled this year. Check
back soon for further details.
"Checking your breasts is simple to
do and can be done at any time. Ideally you should lift
your arm - stretching the skin on the breast - and feel
around the breast. In the shower with soap is one of the
best methods.
Remember the 5-point Breast Awareness code:
- Know what is normal for you
- Look and feel
- Know what changes to look and feel for
- Report any changes without delay
- Attend routine breast screening if aged 50 and over.
